Preactor is right tool for high-precision machining job

A Preactor 200 FCS finite scheduling tool is helping special-purpose, high precision machine manufacturer, Oncad Engineering of Newton Aycliffe, to optimise the efficient running of its entire production operation.

The Preactor interactive electronic planning board helps Oncad Engineering run its ISO9000 system, tracks the progress of jobs, ensures delivery deadlines are met and enables the whole assembly operation to be accurately scheduled.

A Preactor 200 graphical finite scheduling tool has now been installed by Kenard Engineering of Dartford, Kent to help it achieve maximum efficiency from its machine tool capability. Kenard Engineering manufactures high added value products for the aerospace and telecommunications industries, has been trading for almost 35 years and employs some 65 staff.

"The products we make vary enormously, which complicates the process," says Keith Ellis of Kenard Engineering. "But because Preactor is essentially a highly sophisticated interactive electronic planning board, we're able to maintain tight control of our manufacturing operation and optimise the balance between demand and capacity."

With a product range of 40,000 different wire ropes across a wide range of applications, each requiring a precise manufacturing specification, Brunton Shaw's scheduling capacity can quickly reach breaking point. This is nothing new to Brunton Shaw since it has been involved in the manufacture of steel rope for over 100 years. What is new however, is the ever-decreasing lead-time for orders, and the increasing complexity and variety in the actual manufacturing process.

Each type of rope comprises a vast potential combination of components of different widths, materials and finishes, all needing to be put together according to a specific 'recipe', using certain machines in a specific order. When the traditional scheduling system of paper labels and planning boards became increasingly frayed, Brunton Shaw turned to Preactor International for help.
